To celebrate the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Rémy Martin has unveiled its exclusive XO Cannes 2017 limited edition.

If there’s one thing that’s synonymous with the annual invite-only Cannes Film Festival, it’s red carpet galore strewn with glitzy celebrities both past and present ready to preview new films of every genre for the year. The other, of course, is Rémy Martin – the cognac maker has been a strong supporter of the festival since 1981.

So it was in 1981 that then Rémy Martin cellar master André Giraud crafted a special XO that was meant to exude all the elegance and complexity of fine Champagne cognac with all that he could muster, blending together – like a most skilled cinematographer would piece together different scenes into one coherent whole – some 400 eaux-de-vie into one masterful piece.

And while it’s almost two decades down the road – and cognac stocks in Rémy Martin’s prized cellars may have evolved since – its current cellar master Baptiste Loiseau has the unenviable task of replicating that same kind of opulence and refinement in an expression. Loiseau delivers with aplomb, and for the Cannes 2017 edition explodes like the soundscape of a full movie orchestra – aromas of white flowers, accents of fresh and dried stone fruits in plums and figs, punctuated by sweet spiciness of toasted cinnamon and fresh grated hazelnuts.

The gift box, though, is austere in black and fine gold, and quite unrepresentative of the liquid it contains. It features the bottle design under the spotlight on one side and mirrors a film poster on the other. We’re a much bigger fan of the looks of the 2016 version.

But you know what they say about show biz; it’s what goes behind the scenes that count.

The Rémy Martin Cannes XO 2017 edition is available at Absolute Teak, 321 Geylang Road from mid-April 2017 onwards.
