Late night Orchard Towers hotdog sensation Fung Kee Hotdogs opens new outlet on Duxton Road. And with an expanded cocktail menu too.
OK, we confess – one of our favourite drinking haunts is actually located within Orchard Towers. Because tucked deep within that rather unsavoury building is Fung Kee Hotdogs, where we sneak off to sometimes for hotdogs and some of the best Negronis in town. Thankfully to save us our blushes, Pro Hospitality Pte Ltd – the folks behind Fung Kee – has launched a new outlet in the (slightly) less sleazy Duxton Road so we won’t be bombarded by scantily-clad women touting “special” services as we brave the “Four Floors of Whores”.
The new outlet on Duxton Road is just as small as the original in Orchard Towers, but founder Knut Randhem has done wonders despite its cramped space. Indeed he has expanded on the offerings here; aside from what’s normally available there’s an entirely new cocktail menu on offer.
Fung Kee, a Catch 22 situation
Its “Catch-22” menu may just be four cocktails (all priced at $22), but they allow the former head bartender of Ce La Vi to express his inner mixology desires. There’s Gin Tonic, Randhem’s take on the classic but with the added touch of a wine cooler, if you want something refreshing. Or the Saints Old Fashioned, if you’re a fan of a rum version of the classic cocktail.
Those with a sweet tooth would probably derive diabetic pleasure from the ironically named Red Drink – Not Too Sweet, a concoction of strawberry shrub, gin and orange liqueur. Bizarrely, the very delicious Espresso Martini – which one expects to be on the sweet side – is actually very well balanced. And if you’d like a twist on any of these, add $3 for akvavit instead their normal spirit base.
If you’re looking for grub, there’s the very dependable Fung Kee hotdogs. “With my bar and spirits background, I wanted to add a good beverage programme to the menu,” explains Randhem. “So we are serving a range of cocktails, good quality beers, and champagnes to accompany the hotdogs.”
As for us, we’re just glad Fung Kee Hotdogs’ Negronis are within closer reach.
