Risky Business is a new cocktail bar on Duxton Hill that’s wholly inspired by Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and his movies.

Recently opened on Duxton Hill is Risky Business, a cocktail bar that seems to come straight from the movies. In fact the bluish neon halo that’s the backdrop of Risky Business’ bar even looks eerily similar to one from the 1998 movie Cocktail starring Tom Cruise. That’s because Risky Business actually is inspired by everything Tom Cruise; in fact Risky Business is named after the 1983 movie that gave Cruise his first big Hollywood break.

The owner of Risky Business, Briton Jamie Gripton, is a huge fan of Cruise. The brainchild behind alfresco rose wine bar Pandora’s Garden, Gripton decided to convert what was his previously popular casual sports bar The Brightside into a proper cocktail bar that was in an increasingly gentrified area that was Duxton Hill. “It was time,” shares Gripton. “We needed to evolve with the times and also with this area, and this exciting new concept gives people reason to keep coming back.”

Risky Business – A Cocktail Temple to all things Tom Cruise

If you’re a big Tom Cruise fan like Gripton, Risky Business is certainly a reason to visit. Aside from Cruise’s movie memorabilia scattered all over, the cocktails here too are named after famous phrases uttered by the star in his various films. There’s You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling, a Cosmopolitan that references the movie Magnolia which Cruise stars in. Interestingly that Righteous Brothers song was also sung in a karaoke scene in Top Gun too.

Speaking of Top Gun there’s Your Ego Is Writing Cheques Your Body Can’t Cash, which is what Maverick’s boss said to him in reprimand in the move. Here it’s a classic Old Fashioned.

Then there’s Show Me The Money, a dark rum-based Daiquiri, and the margarita that is You Had Me At Hello, both named after utterings in the movie Jerry McGuire. But our favourite has to be You Can’t Handle The Vermouth, a Negroni that obviously references A Few Good Men.

Regular cocktails are just $18++ too, while signature cocktails are $23++.

As for food Risky Business sources some eats from L’Entrecôte, but regulars of The Brightside are going to miss the greasy bar bites that helped the sports bar make its name.

Now we’re not particularly sure that a Tom Cruise-themed bar is going to be the next big thing. But Risky Business is a fun, convivial space with decent cocktails that’s a worthy addition in Duxton Hill. Yellow Pot’s cocktail bar and Restaurant JAG’s The Lounge Bar will be where we’d have a fancy tipple, and Fung Kee Hotdogs on Duxton Road for their Negroni and hotdog combo, but Risky Business is that place where a group of friends can have some crazily drunken fun.

Especially if they’re fans of Tom Cruise.
