United Kingdom-based Campaign for Real Ale, better known as CAMRA, at this year’s Great British Beer Festival crowned Tiny Rebel Brewing Co‘s Cwtch Welsh Red Ale as “Champion Beer of Britain”, beating out a field of 75 other real ales following months of judging around the country.

It’s a tremendous achievement for the Newport, Wales-based brewery, which only officially started operations in February 2012. Cwtch – pronounced as ‘cutch’ and means cuddle in Welsh – was named supreme champion over a host of other finalists in ten different beer categories, covering beers from both small microbreweries to larger, regional brewers.

“The Champion Beer of Britain title is the most coveted title in British beer, for over 20 years brewers have put forward their real ale in the hope it will win and this year Tiny Rebel’s Cwtch is a very worthy winner of this prestigious award,” says Nik Antona, CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain director.

Real ale is cask-conditioned beer that is served traditionally, eschewing the use of additional gas pressure via carbon dioxide or nitrogen tanks for simplE gravity to dispense the beer.

“I feel like I’m dreaming,” shares Tiny Rebel head brewer Gareth Williams. “This is the ultimate award to win in our eyes and after winning at the Great Welsh (Beer Festival) a few years ago this feels even better,” he says, referring to their sweeping the competition by storm and winning Gold for its Dirty Stop Out smoked oatmeal stout, Silver for its FUBAR pale ale and Bronze for its Urban IPA at the Champion Beer of Wales competition in 2013.

“We were brought up on real ale and we love traditional styles,” muses Tiny Rebel co-founder Bradley Cummings. “Cwtch is our modern version of a traditional bitter, with extra hopping for a more pronounced bitterness and aroma. It’s new world and old world all in one.”

In Singapore, Tiny Rebel Brewing is imported and distributed by craft beer supplier Applehops. Other winners at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards 2015 that are available in Singapore include Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker, which won Bronze in the Bitters category, the Adnams Explorer which landed a Gold in the Golden Ales category, as well as the Titanic Plum Porter, which was awarded a Gold in the Specialty Beers category.

Timothy Taylor, Adnams and Titanic are imported here by East of Avalon Wines, Applehops and Eastern Craft Trading respectively.
