Marlborough, New Zealand-based winery Cloudy Bay has released the latest vintage of its Sauvignon Blanc for 2017

2017 was a challenging year for winemakers in the Marlborough wine region of New Zealand; despite a benign ripening season that saw ideal growing conditions with warm temperatures and excellent weather, many wineries in the region were hit when Cyclone Debbie tore through New Zealand earlier this year forcing thousands to evacuate, and bringing a deluge of rain during harvesting season.

It was the same for LVMH-owned Cloudy Bay. Aside from a constricted supply – the Wairau Valley-based winery was forced to discard fruits that were not harvested before the heavy rains arrived – the weather has also impacted the presentation of its new release.

“The production of the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is lower to meet our quality and stylistic standards. We have focused on quality over quantity,” admits Tim Heath, senior winemaker at Cloudy Bay.

Unlike Cloudy Bay’s 2016 vintage, which saw a warm, and one of the driest seasons in Marlborough that afforded more fruit-forwardness, the 2017 release is brighter, and greener with more spin-tinglingly acidity in its backbone. Thankfully some citrus and stone fruit would peek through the crisp dryness and sharp minerality mid-palate and in the finish.

“Cloudy Bay 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent vintage that reveals an elegant and concentrated palate with ripe, juicy stone fruit and lemongrass, supported by a lovely minerality. Its crisp acidity leads to a mouth-watering and persistent finish suggesting a Sauvignon Blanc that will age well,” Heath adds.

The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is available at all leading wine retailers and supermarkets such as Cold Storage, as well as at selected restaurants and bars, retailing at a recommended selling price of S$50 off-premise.
