LOUIS XIII Cognac has teamed up with American rapper Pharrell Williams to create a unique musical composition that will only be released in the year 2117 – assuming that the world has not already gone under a deluge of water due to global warming.
Grammy award-winning hip hop artist Pharrell Williams is better known as a prolific musician and a media mogul than as a climate change activist, but in 2015 he made an impassioned call to world leaders to provide green jobs around the globe in order to tackle climate change. The unlikely environment advocate has followed that up with a partnership with French cognac brand LOUIS XIII, composing “100 Years” – The Song We’ll Only Hear If We Care that will not be released until 2117.
An original song that expresses the relationship between nature and time as well as the human impact on the environment, this special track is recorded onto a record made of clay from the chalk soil of Cognac that’s stored in the cellars of LOUIS XIII within a special state-of-the-art safe destructible only when submerged in water. Now considering climate scientists have warned that sea levels have been rising at such an alarming rate due to climate change that a significant portion of the world’s land will be submerged, there’s actually a possibility that nobody will actually end up hearing the song when 2117 comes.
Speaking of the passage of time, the aging of Cognac stocks – since your bottle of Cognac is put together with a blend from different barrels of varying ages – means that cellar masters always need to think decades, even a century ahead. And that problem is exacerbated by climate change, as Baptiste Loiseau, Rémy Martin’s cellar master and master blender once shared with us in this interview.
