For an area that’s liberally dotted with multiple award-winning cocktail bars and boozy nightspots, it’s surprisingly challenging to find a decent cocktail over lunch at the Bukit Pasoh and Keong Saik Road stretch. Thankfully, enter Clan Cafe.

Clan Cafe, the public cafe of the new members-only “modern day clan association” Straits Clan built over the concrete husk that was New Majestic Hotel, surprisingly serves up a number of alcoholic tipples with their grain bowls and healthy salads.

Here it’s mostly straight-up classics; you can’t do any better than with the Straits Gin & Tonic ($17++) – composed of gin, lime, juniper, rosemary, and tonic – to help you beat the oppressive heat that is the Singapore afternoon, otherwise the Hemingway Daiquiri ($17++), will be similarly refreshing with its white rum and lime juice base. For something punchier there’s the Last Word ($17++) or the Boulevardier ($17++), both of which are punchy and delicious but perhaps better suited for later in the evening.

A surprise on the menu is Blood and Sand ($17++); this Scotch-based classic is relatively rare across cocktail menus here, mainly because it can tend to be a little too sweet for the Asian palate with its sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur, and orange juice composition. Interestingly too that senior assistant bar manager Alastair Tan has eschewed blended Scotch in the regular recipe for single malt whisky – the Singleton of Glen Ord 12 Years Old, to be exact.

For food, the grain or salad bowls here will hit the spot; the Otah Sandwich ($16++) though makes a great little snack with your cocktail, or the Kueh Salat ($6.90++ per slice) if you have a sweet tooth. So if you’re in the area and need a strong drink in the day, call this your – ahem – clandestine spot.
