The Monarchy – a new cocktail bar and party lounge along Tras Street – adds a touch of Cool Brittania to Singapore’s party scene.

The Monarchy is one of the latest nightspots to open up in the food and nightlife enclave that is Tras Street. The brainchild of nightlife entertainment veterans Robbie Hoyes-Cock and Steve Yallop, the cocktail bar takes up the space of two adjoining shophouses. There’s also a disco lounge hidden within, to no one’s surprise; after all Hoyes-Cock and Yallop are known for throwing some of the craziest parties in town. Both put together the Formula One weekend after-party The Podium Lounge, and Yallop used to run party playgrounds Avalon and Pangaea.

The two used to organise a series of VIP parties called The Monarchy at the now-defunct ME@OUE too. This bar is essentially its spiritual successor and permanent home.

The Monarchy – drinking in the name of of “Cool Brittania”.

This quintessentially British cocktail bar drips understated regal luxury; paintings and decor here pay homage to the Royal Houses of Windsor to Lancaster, and Normandy to the Tudors. It’s impressive and all, but for drinkers the cocktail menu’s where it’s at.

The drinks theme here is a tribute to Cool Brittania, a movement in the ’90s dedicated to fostering pride in all things British. Each of the 18 cocktails are themselves cheekily named after famous songs by British musicians throughout the decades.

There’s Champagne Supernova, but of course, a hat tip to the wildly popular hit by Oasis. If we had to describe it, it’s a Pimm’s Cup reimagined as a juice detox: Pimm’s, fresh fruit juice, bursts of ginger, and topped with champagne. Those who like their drinks strong should opt for Mr Churchill Says. It’s basically a martini with more gin and no vermouth, a cocktail that Winston Churchill himself would have loved.

The Monarchy Paint It Black

The adventurous may want to try Paint It Black, a smoky take on the whisky sour. Named after The Rolling Stones’ song, this version eschews citrus (it uses citric acid) and egg white.

Amy Winehouse gets her own cocktail too; Rehab is an amped-up Bloody Mary. The addition of overproof rum, beetroot and port though can be somewhat polarising for those who love the classic cocktail.

If you’re not a fan of cocktails, there are a couple of wines here you should try. The Monarchy has partnered with Margaret River winemakers Peccavi Estate to produce a Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016 and a Cabernet Merlot 2017 exclusively available here.

The Monarchy Ultra Lounge.

On weekends and eve of public holidays from 10pm, the hidden nightclub within The Monarchy powers up. This party space will see house music DJs and live celebrity acts spin beats to VIP tables enjoying bottle service. Yes it’s The Monarchy VIP night, all over again.

“We are thrilled to not only rekindle, but remarkably enhance The Monarchy experience for those who have been clamouring for a revival of our Monarchy party nights, and this time re-imagined as something that has never been done in Singapore – a cocktail bar and ultra lounge with a unique and cheeky British flavour,” says The Monarchy co-founder Robbie Hoyes-Cock.

“Guests of The Monarchy can enjoy two exciting and distinctly memorable experiences in one single location,” Hoyes-Cock adds.

“The “secret” ultra lounge elevates the evenings journey from cocktail bar chill, to naughty nightclub night. It will be a wonderful surprise for first time guests as the doors open, and a moment of anticipation for our regulars, especially those who remember the heady days of Pangaea,” shares co-founder Steve Yallop.
