JR East Group celebrates quality Japanese wines with its Japan Premium Wine Fair promotion this March, featuring five wines across 11 different restaurants in Singapore.
Japan is known for being the home of sake, and in recent times established a strong reputation for its whiskies. But Japan also produces wine, even if much of their domestic production doesn’t get out of the country much; in fact less than 0.1% of its total production is exported at all. Hence you’d be hard-pressed to find any made-in-Japan wines in Singapore.
If you’re looking to try Japanese wines, now’s your chance. Tokyo-based transportation company JR East Group has kicked off its Japan Premium Wine Fair to promote and raise awareness of made-in-Japan wines, focusing particularly on Japanʼs wine-producing regions of Yamagata and Yamanashi. It has brought in five made-in-Japan wines that you can try across 11 different restaurants and stores in Singapore – and at special prices too – amongst which are wines made with indigenous Japanese grape varietals such as Koshu and Muscat Bailey A, both which are not grown outside of Japan.
The five wines are:
- Japan Wine Sakura (Yamanashi Prefecture)
- Chateau Jun Koshu 2019 (Yamanashi Prefecture)
- 2018 Rubaiyat Muscat Bailey A Barrel Aged (Yamanashi Prefecture)
- 2016 Takahata Arkadia Select Harvest (Yamagata Prefecture)
- 2017 Takahata Le Clôture Életrique en Kamiwada Chardonnay (Yamagata Prefecture)
“The wines selected for the Japan Premium Wine Fair this time are all excellent products that are not in any way inferior to internationally famous wines,” says Kawai Daisuke, owner and sommelier at award-winning wine bar La Terre, which is participating in the fair.
“While Japanese wines were previously known for being too sweet and therefore not favoured by oenophiles, the wines available now are different. As long as you drop your biases and face the wine in front of you, I am confident that you will be able to see whatʼs so good about it. I hope that wine-loving Singaporeans and expats, in addition to Japanese, will be able to enjoy the wines this time,” Daisuke adds.
