Newly-released MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2025 names Dewakan as recipient of Malaysia’s first MICHELIN Green Star.
Modern Malaysian fine dining restaurant Dewakan gets even more love from the MICHELIN Guide with the latest Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2025 guide, unveiled at an awards ceremony earlier this week, awarding the two-Michelin-starred eatery with the country’s first ever MICHELIN Green Star.
MICHELIN’s Green Star recognises restaurants for industry-leading sustainable practices. Chef Darren Teoh’s razor-sharp focus on sourcing unique local produce along with a farm-to-table, nose-to-tail approach – including fermenting food scraps to make sauces – impressed inspectors enough to land the extra standalone award and, as the guide puts it, Dewakan “exemplifies how fine dining and sustainability can go hand in hand”.
While Dewakan remains Malaysia’s sole two-MICHELIN-starred restaurant, the new MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2025 sees two new restaurants earning their first MICHELIN stars. Kuala Lumpur-based eateries Chim by Chef Noom, which offers its twist on inventive contemporary Thai cuisine, and Molina, a fine dining modern European venue combining French and Nordic influences with an Asian twist, join Au Jardin, Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery, Beta, and DC. by Darren Chin to give Malaysia a total of six one-MICHELIN-starred venues.
The latest guide – this is its third, after a successful debut in 2022 for its inaugural 2023 edition – also named 56 Bib Gourmand and 80 MICHELIN Selected venues, for a total of 143 establishments in this year’s roundup.
Various special awards were also given out. Azmi Ahmad Kamal of Chim by Chef Noom picked up this year’s Service Award for exceptional service, while the Sommelier Award was award to Han Lai from Terra Dining. This year’s Young Chef Award was given to Waymann Cheong from Lucky Hole, while Guillaume Depoortere, the head chef of Molina, was recognised with The Opening of the Year Award for making a significant and immediate impact on the local culinary scene.
“As we reveal the third edition of the MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2025, we are truly impressed by the remarkable progress of Malaysia’s culinary landscape. It’s inspiring to see two new restaurants earn one MICHELIN Star, and the addition of 12 new Bib Gourmand establishments showcases the rich diversity of local flavours,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide.
“From preserving cherished family recipes to embracing sustainability with our first MICHELIN Green Star restaurant, these establishments reflect the heart and soul of Malaysia’s culinary heritage. We are excited to celebrate the passion, creativity, and dedication that make this country’s cuisine special,” Poullennec added.
