1920’s-inspired The Clubroom at Amoy St delivers steadfast American steakhouse classics with poise and aplomb.
Did you know? Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House has a sister concept, and she’s one hot number.
Located along the dynamic Amoy Street dining and lifestyle stretch, The Clubroom is a classy and glittery offshoot of the posh American steakhouse and oyster bar around the corner at nearby Gemmill Lane. Originally established in late 2021 as an exclusive dining space for the most stratified of Luke’s clientele, founder and chef-restaurateur Travis Masiero decided to finally unveil the once-private space to the public.
It’s like proud Luke’s younger sister’s finally grown up and is now ready to face the world.
And ready for prime time she is. The Clubroom is swanky and beautifully appointed, presented as a New York City speakeasy tastefully clad in Art Deco garb. A full-length marbled bar runs down one side of the restaurant, the opposite flank flush with cognac brown leather banquettes that totally exude classic 90’s Chicago chop house feels. Then there’s its striking curved roof, which you sometimes find at those hip and cutting-edge restaurant bars nestled beneath London’s historic railway arches.
The cuisine here is similar to Luke’s, if a bit more contemporary and elevated.
Lobster “Popcorn” describes exactly what you’d expect, a luxurious twist on popcorn shrimp or, to be more exact, the late American celebrity chef Paul Prudhomme’s crawfish-based Cajun popcorn. These are made with nuggets of juicy lobster flesh, and served with two sauces – a spicy one with Old Bay seasoning, and a herb mayonnaise.
Popular signature at sister restaurant Blue Label Pizza Spinach & Artichoke Dip makes an appearance on The Clubroom’s menu, and for good reason. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Cheesy and creamy, this is one delicious dip.
For mains, you can’t go wrong with seafood. Crab cakes are a classic steakhouse staple and The Clubroom’s Crab Cakes “Club Style” does not disappoint, chockfull as it is with a generous amount of crab meat with nary a filler in each bite. Pro tip: Save the the spicy sauce from the lobster “popcorn” to pair with the crab cakes and accompanying coleslaw.
And because there’s never enough lobster, there’s Lobster Omelette. This sounds like it should belong on a breakfast or brunch menu, but it’s totally worth ordering as a dinner main. Silky, fluffy, and reminiscent of creamily indolent omelette on top of a Japanese omu rice, this unexpected main is stuffed with lobster pieces and finished off with an indulgent caviar beurre blanc laden with just enough acidity to cut through the eggy richness.
In a more carnivorous (and ravenous) mood? Go for The Clubroom’s Cape Grim Tomahawk. Simplicity reigns here; the hunk of steak is simply seasoned with salt and pepper, then charred over wood fire. The Clubroom only uses low- and slow-burning American almond wood, which offers a milder smokiness than say oak or hickory wood so as not to overwhelm the beef’s natural flavours.
For sides, our top picks are Luke’s Kale Salad and Luke’s Lobster Mac & Cheese. Despite its pedestrian appearance, the kale salad packs a punch when it comes to flavour with its sweet herb dressing and crunchy peanuts. The mac & cheese is as classic as it gets, but taken to another level with so much lobster we joked that we almost couldn’t find the pasta.
Yes, more lobster.
For dessert, plonk for Luke’s Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies. Together with an accompanying milkshake – made with a stout ice cream – it makes for the perfect sweet ending to any meal. We’d also recommend the punchy and robustly Luke’s Espresso Martini as a nightcap.
Speaking of which, The Clubroom runs a smashing cocktail programme perfectly in line with its speakeasy vibes.
You can start light with the sweet bourbon-based Alpine Dream with honey umeshu, yuzu and egg white, or the refreshing gin-based Old-Time Bramble with lime juice and house-made blackberry syrup, before moving on to boozy classics like The Perfect Clubroom Manhattan and Signature Sidecar. Or simply opt for any of its martini variations.
You’ll definitely want to have a date with The Clubroom. Just make sure your companion isn’t the jealous sort.
