Ichishima Shuzo is one of the most prominent breweries in Niigata, Japan.
A recipient of multiple sake awards, the kura has been owned and run by the Ichishima family since its founding in 1790. Although steeped in tradition, Ichishima has a history of progressive thinking. Fourth generation president and owner Chomatsu Ichishima created the Aumont label in the style of European crests, and encouraged the hire of female workers; one of the first breweries to do so.
The brewery’s approach has not changed to this day, and is upheld by its current owner and Chomatsu’s grandson: the equally forward-thinking Kenji Ichishima, who is deeply involved also in the wider world of sake. Amongst his many appointments, he serves as chairperson of the public relations committee of the Niigata Brewer’s Association, and is a former chairperson and current active member of the Japan Brewery Junior Council.
Presented by Inter Rice Asia, Kenji Ichichima’s sake masterclass will be an excellent way to acquaint yourself with sake, Niigata style.
