Organised by Japanese craft beer brewery Hitachino Nest and beer distributor Eastern Craft Trading in collaboration with the Singapore Craft Brew Club, the Tokyo Calling homebrewing competition will see its winner announced at JiBiru Craft Beer Bar on Sunday 24 January 2016 from 4pm.
The homebrewing scene in Singapore has been seeing some encouraging growth in recent years, spurred by the heroic efforts of brewing supplies shops iBrew and Homebrew Co-op to build a homebrewing community here. Last year’s iBrew Challenge, for example, drew a huge crowd of homebrewing and beer enthusiasts to see who emerged amongst Singapore’s best homebrewers.
For Tokyo Calling, Ibaraki, Japan-based Hitachino Nest of Kiuchi Brewery and Eastern Craft Trading worked with the Singapore Craft Brew Club on a competition that will see the ultimate winner fly to Japan and brew their winning recipe in its Kanda, Tokyo pilot brewing lab. The judging, which will take place this coming week, sees a panel which includes the likes of Kiuchi Brewery vice-president and founder Youichi Kiuchi, Eastern Craft Trading director Jeremy Reynolds, Singapore Craft Brew Club president David Pilgrim, CRAFT Singapore organizer Charles Guerrier, and Smith Street Taps and Brewers’ Craft boss Meng Chao taste through 25 entries to find the winning brew, based on the theme of a beer inspired by Hitachino Nest, Ibaraki and Japan.
On Sunday 24 January 2016, Kiuchi Brewery’s Kiuchi-san will announce the winner at JiBiru. Also available at Jibiru on tap that day will be a once-off collaboration beer between Hitachino Nest and hawker bar Smith Street Taps – the Hitachino Nest x Smith Street Taps Sumisu Sutoreeto スミス．ストリート Session IPA – brewed specially for this Tokyo Calling results event.
