Robert Parker Wine Advocate adds Mezcal Review, a special report on mezcal, to its subscriber-based website robertparker.com.

In a sure sign that worldwide popularity for mezcal is growing rapidly, leading wine authority Robert Parker Wine Advocate has announced a special report on mezcal to be released this July. Called the Mezcal Review, this inaugural report aims to deliver an authoritative introduction to mezcal, as well as provide recommendations for every level of mezcal drinker, from the serious enthusiast to those just dipping their toes into this spirit category.

Mezcal Review is written by Emma Janzen, an occasional contributor to Robert Parker Wine Advocate, journalist, photographer, and formerly Imbibe Magazine’s digital content editor. Janzen is a prolific author. She wrote “Mezcal: The History, Craft and Cocktails of the World’s Ultimate Artisanal Spirit”, which was nominated for a James Beard Foundation award in 2018. She also co-authored “The Way of the Cocktail” with Julia Momosé of Kumiko and “The Bartender’s Manifesto” with Toby Maloney of The Violet Hour, and also contributed to David Wondrich’s “The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails”.

For those unfamiliar with mezcal, this mostly artisanal agave-based spirit is often called “Mexico in a bottle”. Distilled from agave or maguey (a type of desert plant with spiky leaves), mezcals run the gamut of styles depending on the producer. Some can be fresh and sweet, others more robust and smoky, while a number – the Mezcal de Pechuga – are even distilled with a raw chicken or turkey hung over the still along with nuts, fruits and grains, imbuing the spirit with a heartier, even savoury, character.

“Agave-based spirits such as mezcal and tequila have shown up as one of the fastest-growing spirits categories of the past few years. Robert Parker Wine Advocate’s new mezcal report offers insightful reviews on this category that complements our latest initiatives to provide consumers with timely, expert opinions on global drinks trends,” says Nicolas Achard, CEO of Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate’s first Mezcal Review report reviews 20 different mezcals, including the Los Siete Misterios Coyote, Montelobos Ensamble, and the Del Maguey Vida de Muertos, among others.
