Craig Road grigliata Griglia opens an outpost in Katong and brings its popular Italian favourites to Singapore’s east.

People often say the east of Singapore is a haven for food lovers. Or at least, residents living there certainly think so! Indeed there’s a plethora of food choices – ranging from iconic Straits Chinese cuisine and gentrified cafes at Katong or Siglap to local hawker offerings and waterfront seafood restaurants at Changi Village and East Coast – that attract foodies from other parts of the island looking to sate their appetites.

Add one more reason for them to visit. Griglia Open Fire Italian Kitchen on Craig Road has opened an outpost in Katong.

The cosy casual space at Griglia Katong gets lively and boisterous.

We’ve been to the original Griglia before and enjoyed its elevated take on traditional Italian grigliata fare. The newly-opened 34-seater at Katong offers pretty much the same, just in a more casual and boisterous setting. Diners this part of town can expect the heady flame-kissed meats and seafoods you find at the original outlet, along with robust pastas and hearty pizzas to please those who love their Italian eats.

But first, you should start off your meal here with cold dishes such as Sicilian Tomatoes with wild oregano and Tarallo bread crumble, Tuna Crudo with pine nuts, radish and smoked oil, or Hokkaido Scallops with white corn and Amalfi lemon.

Whichever starter you choose, be sure to order some delectable House-made Focaccia to mop up all those different flavours!

Beautifully sweet tomatoes at Griglia

Griglia’s Baked Eggplant is their version of eggplant parmigiana made with a specific variety of Italian eggplant that surprisingly has no trace of bitterness at all. Layers of eggplant and buffalo mozzarella in a sweet tomato sauce and topped with Ligurian basil made for a dish that even a carnivore like myself would strongly recommend.

It’s a travesty to visit an Italian restaurant without ordering a pasta. And the Fusilli “Monograno Felicetti” with jumbo crab and spicy ‘nduja here is not one to miss. The ‘nduja lends a lovely underlying heat to the salinity of the crab for a perfectly balanced sauce.

But this is a grill house after all. For those carnivorous inclinations, the 30 Days Dry Aged Porterhouse ‘Fiorentina’ is a beautiful slab of meat that is cooked in the most no frills, straight up “what you see is what you get” way. Done to medium rare perfection with the right amount of char and smokiness, it is exactly the way we like our meats.

If you prefer a seafood main? The Half Spanish Turbot is generous side of grilled fish that will definitely satisfy with its sweet ocean freshness and flame-crisped skin.

Pastas are always a great option at Griglia Katong.

Even the vegetable at Griglia get a little je ne sais quoi. You’ll definitely want to pair your mains with Charcoal Grilled Baby Corn, Sauteed Kale and Romaine Lettuce.

For those with a sweet tooth, round off your repast with Sicilian Cannoli, which is so easy to eat, or Nocciolamisu, a hazelnut version of tiramisu made with mascarpone, frangelico, espresso, if you want a richer dessert.

Even better, drop in during weekends. Exclusive to Griglia in Katong is its ‘Weekend Grigliata’, a lunchtime feast with appetisers, free-flow pasta, mains, and dessert for just S$68++per person.

There’s no lack of good food in Singapore’s east. And Griglia in Katong just gave us yet another option.
