Local craft brewery Specific Gravity Beverage Co picks up four awards at Australian International Beer Awards 2021.

Specific Gravity Beverage Co may be almost spanking-new – the homegrown craft brewery only officially debuted in Singapore’s craft brewing scene in December last year – but it’s already making waves. The small brewing outfit, headed by Singapore craft beer industry veterans Devin Otto Kimble and Kim Wong, just landed four major accolades at the recent Australian International Beer Awards.

The Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) is the largest annual beer competition in the world assessing both draught and packaged beers. Held annually by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, the competition regularly attracts over 2,600 entries from more than 400 breweries in 26 countries.

At the 2021 edition held last week, Specific Gravity picked up four awards:

  • a Gold and a trophy for Best Design for its Classic IPA, Craft Lager, and Wheat Beer 4 Packs;
  • a Bronze medal for Best Design – Label/Surface Design for its Classic IPA, Craft Lager, and Wheat Beer labels;
  • a Bronze for its Classic IPA in the category of British Style (Best Traditional IPA); and
  • a Bronze for its Wheat Beer in the category of German Style Hefe (Best Wheat Beer)

“We are thrilled to have been recognised by such a prominent organisation,” said SGBC co-founder and managing director Devin Otto Kimble, an industry veteran who used to head brewing operations at Singapore’s Brewerkz and Hong Kong’s Hong Kong Beer Co. “It really makes it worth all the hard work put in by our team to produce accessible, world-class craft beer from our home in Singapore.”

Specific Gravity Brewing Co beer range

Unlike most new craft brewing outfits in Singapore that tends to gravitate towards more modern beer styles like New England IPAs and sour beers, Specific Gravity has found its niche brewing more classic styles. Its core range currently offers a Classic IPA, Craft Lager, a German-style Wheat Beer, and a Golden Ale. Landing accolades for its Classic IPA and Wheat Beer at AIBA is validation for its more traditional approach.

In addition to its core range, Specific Gravity also offers various seasonal brews that explore an even wider breadth of classic styles. Recent seasonal beers include a cask ale served off a traditional hand pump, as well as German favourites such as Maibock and Marzen.
