Local craft breweries Specific Gravity and Lion Brewery collaborate for Unleashed, a limited-edition Vienna Lager that aims to raise funds for dog welfare groups.
If you’ve visited breweries across the world, you’ll realise a number of things about brewers. That many are male with hipster beards, and that many of them love dogs. Yes, like winery dogs, brewery dogs are a thing. While the latest beer collaboration between award-winning Specific Gravity Beverage Company and Lion Brewery doesn’t quite feature bushy beards, it does involve dogs! Two local craft beer breweries have combined to launch its ‘Unleash The Love’ campaign to help raise funds for two local animal welfare organisations.
The ‘Unleash The Love’ campaign brings together two of man’s best friends – beer and dogs. There’s the Unleashed Vienna Lager, a limited-edition beer that brewers Kim Wong of the Specific Gravity Beverage Company and Greg Brown, Brewer at Lion Brewery, worked together on. If you’re familiar with more uncommon beer styles, you’ll know that the Vienna Lager is an amber-coloured beer style from Austria that’s both malty-sweet and refreshingly bitter at the same time. The beer style was in danger of being forgotten at one point in history, but today has been revived – two of the most famous examples of a Vienna Lager today are Brooklyn Brewery’s Brooklyn Lager, and Negra Modelo by Modelo.
The other part of ‘Unleash The Love’ is using the spent grain from the brewing process to make dog biscuits. Specific Gravity and Lion Brewery approached The Barkery, a bakery that specialises in making baked goods for canines, to make those biscuits. Porkies was created, which sees the spent grain combined with some minced lean pork and a touch of cinnamon into a treat that most dogs will find hard to resist.
As part of the collaboration project, Specific Gravity and Thirty Six Smokehouse & Brewlab by Lion Brewery are aiming to raise funds for two animal welfare groups – SOSD (Save Our Street Dogs) and Causes For Animals (Singapore). They are running an Instagram campaign where they will donate S$1 for each unique Instagram photo of someone enjoying Unleashed Vienna Lager and/or Porkies. If the photo includes both Unleashed Vienna Lager and Porkies, an additional S$1 will be donated.

To qualify, IG posts need to use use the #unleashthelovesg hashtag and/or tag @sgbevco, @lionbreweryco, and/or @thirtysix_sg.
“We love beer and we love dogs,” shared Kim Wong of the Specific Gravity Beverage Company. “How great is it that we can make one and help the other? We hope it will give our beer-drinking friends paws for thought.”
“Not only are we making beer and helping dogs, it’s also a great way for us to remain sustainable and give something back to the community,” added Lion Brewery’s Greg Brown.
The Barkery will donate 20% to charity for each purchase of 100 grams of Porkies from their shop in Joo Chiat Road and LINO at Binjai Park, and will also donate $1 for each bottle sold.
