The Straits Wine Company, organiser of Wine Fiesta, has confirmed that its popular annual wine festival will again not be taking place this year.

One of the greatest casualties inflicted on Singapore by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is its events space. Between the lack of travel and implementation of strict social management measures to curtail any COVID-19 spread, large scale events have all pretty much been cancelled since 2020. This has included all major drinks-related events in Singapore last year.

The dearth of events has continued into 2021. The Straits Wine Company recently announced that its annual flagship wine event – Wine Fiesta – will not be taking place this year, and instead is moved to 2022. The popular wine festival, which the wine and spirits retailer has held since 2008, normally draws large crowds of wine enthusiasts that number in the thousands. Over the years the annual event has brought together wineries, industry professionals and wine lovers to sample a wide selection of wines from around the world.

“With the ongoing pandemic, we have to make sensible choices for the sake of public health and safety,” explained Patrick Sng, CEO of The Straits Wine Company, on the cancellation of Wine Fiesta in 2021. Wine Fiesta was also cancelled last year.

“Whilst traveling is proving difficult in the foreseeable future, life has to go on. The sooner we adapt to a new normal, the better life can be. Instead we will continue to explore ways to deliver fresh consumer experiences centred around food and wine under evolving conditions of the pandemic,” he added.

Sng shared that over the past year and a half since the pandemic first came to these shores, The Straits Wine Company had pivoted to offering differing engagements catering to the varied needs of their trade customers, corporate customers, and end consumers. These include various virtual wine masterclasses, distillery tours, and tasting sessions.

“(Those have been) fun, educational, and entertaining. We are optimistic that with a higher rate of vaccination around the world, larger scale events may eventually materialise under a safe environment,” Sng said.

The Straits Wine Company recently opened SNOB by Straits, a lifestyle concept wine bar located at Mess Hall in Sentosa that focuses on sustainable, natural, organic and biodynamic wines.
