Singapore lands seven spots on the lauded Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 list, which was headed by Tokyo’s Den in the coveted No.1 spot.

The highly-anticipated annual awards list that is Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has just been announced, and the 2022 edition sees Tokyo’s Den grab the No.1 spot with its creative twists on traditional Japanese cuisine. Singapore claims a total of seven spots, headed by Odette at No.8.

Now in its 10th year, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 is a triumph for Japan’s vaunted dining scene. Aside from Den topping the list – the first time a Japan-based restaurant had taken the No.1 spot since 2014 – the Land of the Rising Sun claimed another 10 places in the top 50, with Tokyo’s Florilège (No.3) and Osaka’s La Cime (No.6) also coming in the top 10.

In summary, the seven Singapore restaurants that entered into top 50 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 list (vs 2021) are:

  • Odette (#8)/(#2)
  • Meta (#20)/- (new entry)
  • Les Amis (#23)/(#13)
  • Zén (#37)/(#23)
  • Burnt Ends (#41)/(#14)
  • Cloudstreet (#44)/(#31)
  • Labyrinth (#40)/(#40)

Aside from being named The Best Restaurant in Singapore for the fifth consecutive year, Odette was also declared the 2022 recipient of the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award, “in recognition of operations director Steven Mason and his team’s combination of ultra-professionalism and warm individuality, which elevates the dining experience to new levels”.

But Singapore’s overall performance has suffered this year. The draconian measures placed on Singapore’s dining scene due to the ongoing COVID pandemic in the past two years continues to cripple it, particularly the restrictions on inbound travel. Almost all of Singapore’s entries dropped down the ranks; Odette itself fell from No.2 spot last year, while Burnt Ends plunged from No.14 to the 41st position. Only Labyrinth held to its No.40 spot from last year, while Euphoria and Jaan by Kirk Westaway fell out of the top 50 altogether.

The one bright light? Modern fusion restaurant Meta, famed for its Korean inflections on European cuisine. The 2021 winner of the American Express One To Watch Award, Meta finally made its debut on this year’s list at No.20.
