The Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Cacao hits global retail travel hubs from May 2022, starting with Singapore in collaboration with Changi Airport Group and Lotte Duty Free.
Leading single malt Scotch whisky brand The Macallan has officially announced the newest release in its limited annual release Harmony Collection series. The Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Cacao follows after the Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao, likewise an expression that leans on the characteristics of chocolate. But unlike its older cousin that was allocated to domestic markets – and subsequently quickly sold out – the Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Cacao is destined as a global travel retail exclusive.
As with Rich Cacao, this edition was created in partnership with renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca of El Celler de Can Roca fame, and saw Macallan’s Whisky Maker Polly Logan visit Roca’s famed chocolate factory, Casa Cacao in Girona, Spain. There she explored the chocolate-making process, uncovering various flavour profiles in chocolate that inspired her for the new whisky. Logan also received advice from British master chocolatier, Damian Allsop.
This travel retail expression, Macallan’s Whisky Maker Polly Logan says, brings together the worlds of whisky and chocolate. She leveraged on sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks maturing at The Macallan Estate that exuded specific chocolate notes she was looking for. She was particularly going for an elegant yet indulgent medium chocolate profile.
“I set out looking for a specific chocolate note in The Macallan’s traditional sherry seasoned European oak casks and combined this with a vanilla note imparted by sherry seasoned American oak casks to sweeten it slightly,” Logan explains. “With a natural colour of toasted cacao beans, this exquisite single malt has a unique and elegant medium chocolate profile with raisin and toffee notes and offers a wonderful whisky and chocolate pairing experience.”
While Rich Cacao had offered plenty of sweet milk chocolate notes on the nose and palate, Fine Cacao offered earthier dusty cocoa and bitter cacao nibs with a very dry medium finish. We also like that the Fine Cacao also comes in more sustainable packaging, featuring a beautiful fully recyclable and biodegradable presentation box made from the husks of the cacao pod.
Singapore will be the first global travel hub to launch the Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Cacao. “The Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Cacao is the first release in the Harmony Collection for global travel retail and we are delighted to unveil this timely and unique expression, in collaboration with Changi Airport Group and Lotte Duty Free,” says Jeremy Speirs, Managing Director, Edrington Global Travel Retail.
This global travel retail exclusive will be available at Singapore Changi Airport Lotte Duty Free shops from May 2022 at the price of S$215. It will then be introduced more widely to other global travel retail hubs from mid-May 2022.
