LVMH’s Volcan X.A Tequila, an ultra-premium product from Volcan de mi Tierra, is finally released in Singapore.

You know a spirits category is finally going to have its time in the sun when luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy gets involved. For tequila? That was back in 2017, when LVMH purchased a stake in tequila producer Volcan and added the agave spirit to its burgeoning portfolio of luxury wines and spirits.

And not just any tequila. Gallardo-owned Volcan has a strong and centuries-long tradition of making tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco near the volcano of Tequila for which it is named. But when a chance encounter between Juan Gallardo and former Moët Hennessy chairman Christoph Navarre resulted in a conversation around the tremendous potential of tequila, joint venture Volcán De Mi Tierra – a secret project codenamed ‘Project Blue’ – was the result.

Like most top tequila producers, Volcán De Mi Tierra – ‘volcano of my land’ – sources the best blue weber agave from across the highlands and lowlands of Jalisco. Because if there’s one thing LVMH understands very well, it’s the importance of terroir. Think of its stable of champagnes like Dom Pérignon and Veuve Clicquot, or single malt Scotch such as Glenmorangie.

But what truly What sets Volcán De Mi Tierra apart from most other producers is the innovative use of blending techniques (of course, another LVMH area of expertise). Each Volcán De Mi Tierra tequila expression is specifically blended to reflect its provenance, leveraging on the use of both American oak and European oak casks to mature its spirit before blending them to create their house styles.

Top-of-the-range Volcan X.A. Tequila represents Volcán De Mi Tierra’s pinnacle of innovation and excellence. For this ultra-premium expression, the distillery actually blends a base of Reposado with Añejo and Extra-Añejo to create a tequila of incredible complexity. For the X.A the distillery also specifically uses a set of exclusive barrels made with American oak – what it calls its ‘Grace Casks’ – to impart smooth, toasted, and vanilla aromas.

And while the very fancy Volcan X.A. Tequila bottle with its heavy golden stopper can mislead you to think it’s a mere party tipple, it is really an incredible complex tequila made for savouring slowly. On the nose you’ll find the distinctly sweet notes of agave, underscored by notes of incense wood, vanilla and candied fruit. On the palate? An explosion of silky caramel, wood spice and dried herbs, ending with a finish that’s prickly with white pepper, toasted almond and a touch of pleasant bitterness.

“We are pleased to announce the latest addition of the Volcan X.A to our expanding portfolio in the region. The Volcan X.A tequila is sure to ignite delight amongst tequila aficionados and alcohol consumers alike in Singapore,” said Patrick Madendjian, Managing Director of Moët Hennessy Diageo Singapore & Malaysia.

The Volcan X.A Tequila is available at various nightlife and F&B establishments in island-wide.
