Casual Cavan Road eatery REX Steakhouse + Bar puts forth a steak-forward menu offering a tasty showcase of lesser-known beef cuts, as well as a smashingly good burger.
Singapore’s vibrant Jalan Besar enclave recently saw the addition of a new steakhouse to its burgeoning dining options. REX Steakhouse + Bar – opened by the same folks behind American-style barbecue restaurant Red Eye Smokehouse – offers a range of quality cuts sourced from premium producers grilled and served up for your carnivorous pleasure.
While there are the very dependable and familiar meat choices options here – such as rib eye and striploin – REX is great for those of us who prefer lesser-known alternative steak cuts.
We tried the King River Wagyu MS 5+ Picanha and Jack’s Creek Wagyu MS 4+ Zabuton – which the steak lovers among us know as the rump cap and Denver steak, respectively – both of which offer different degrees of robust meatiness, chewy fat and unctuous juiciness that many of us aficionados desire.
Other dishes are also competently executed. The Brick Chicken comes out juicy and moist with the requisite char on the skin, for example. We rather enjoyed many of the starters too. The Fire Roasted Eggplant Dip is a nuanced take on the classic baba ghanoush, but here the use of miso imparts a lovely complex unami note. The Whipped Burrata is similarly delicious, a creamy mound of soft burrata topped with grilled cherry tomatoes and doused in olive oil and pesto.
But the absolute winner at REX Steakhouse + Bar? The Smash Cheeseburger. We know, smashed burgers are on trend and a bit on the gimmicky side. But the one here features a patty amalgamated from all the different off cuts from the excellent steaks, making it far more luxurious than most. Opt for the double patty too, we say.
We like that the minimalist – and almost starkly so – setting at REX. It’s open, convivial and non-intimidating, catering to many different kinds of diners, whether you come as a family, a bunch of friends looking to catch up, or for a quiet date.
We’ll be honest and say we still very much prefer Red Eye Smokehouse over REX, mostly because great American-style barbecue – that fork-tender brisket! – is still relatively rare in Singapore compared to good steakhouses.
But we’d definitely be back for that smash cheeseburger.
