Singapore’s Jigger & Pony, Sago House and ATLAS rank on The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 list which saw Barcelona’s Sips take the top spot.

Barcelona’s nightlife scene has again reason to celebrate as cutting-edge cocktail bar Sips was announced as the world’s No. 1 bar at last evening’s The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 awards ceremony in Singapore. This follows fellow Barna bar Paradiso’s win last year, which means the Spanish city has grabbed the top spot on the list two years running.

Host country Singapore saw three of its bars enter the list, one more than in 2022. Pioneering classic cocktail bar Jigger & Pony continues its winning ways as the Lion City’s best performing bar by coming in at No.14, while casual cocktail haunt Sago House – which is set to relocate to a new, swankier space – surprised cocktail pundits by skyrocketing from its No.51 position last year to the No.32 spot. Grand lobby bar ATLAS makes its re-entry into the list at No.48, rounding out the Republic’s representation.

Sago House - team
No fuss, all flavour – beloved local cocktail haunt Sago House makes the World’s 50 Best Bars list this year.

“We’re beyond proud to be able to represent the community in Singapore as one of the three bars on the World’s 50 Best list this year. The team has worked so hard to get to this point, and this is an exciting milestone for us as we look ahead to the future in our new space,” said Jay Gray, co-founder of Sago House.

The newly-released World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 featured bars from a total of 28 different cities, celebrating the burgeoning international drinks sector. The vaunted list sported 11 new entries – from Bangkok, Berlin, Dubai, London, Melbourne, New Orleans, Paris, Rome, Seoul, Singapore, and Stockholm – showcasing the diversity and excellence across the entirety of the international cocktail scene.

Closer to home, BKK Social in the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok became the ‘Best Bar in Asia’ when it flew into an impressive No.13 position, while fellow Bangkok bar Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar rocked up to No.19. The winner of this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Bars, COA of Hong Kong, came in at No.20, while Argo – located in Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong – was No.34.

Special mention goes to Zest, which was the list’s highest new entry at No.18. The sustainable focus of this cocktail bar in Seoul’s fashionable Gangnam district – their seasonal gin and tonics, for example, employ herbs and flowers sourced from their own contract farm – offer a different yet welcome experience in South Korea’s drinking scene.

Announced earlier this month were the winners ranked 51-100 in The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023. Five Singapore bars made the secondary list: 28 HongKong Street (No.59), Manhattan (No.63), Nutmeg & Clove (No.64), Analogue Initiative (No.78), and Native (No.83). Cosy retro-futuristic Singapore cocktail hideout Night Hawk picked up supplementary honours with the inaugural Bareksten Best Bar Design Award.

“Hosting the World’s 50 Best Bars has been incredibly exciting for our community. You can just sense that the city is ready to welcome the world from the 100+ guest shifts preceding the awards ceremony. We cannot be happier to extend our Singaporean hospitality and diversity of bars to visiting bartenders from around the world,” shared Indra Kantono, co-founder of Jigger & Pony Group.

What a winning team looks like – Jigger & Pony Group’s flagship venue continues its winning ways.

The World’s 50 Best Bars list is composed from votes by 680 anonymous drinks experts from across the globe, headed by regional chairs who select voters based on their knowledge of the scene including renowned bartenders and consultants, drinks writers and cocktail specialists.

“As the brainchild of cocktail-world icons Marc Álvarez and Simone Caporale, Sips was destined for greatness even before it rocketed into the list at No.37 just a few short months after opening in 2021. The bar seamlessly translates contemporary innovation and technical precision into a playful cocktail programme, accompanied by the warmest hospitality, making it a worthy winner of The World’s Best Bar 2023 title,” said William Drew, Director of Content, 50 Best.

“We have once again seen the number of cocktail cities represented here increase, and hope this list continues to ignite the spark of wanderlust for cocktail lovers around the world,” Drew added.

  1. […] With just 42 rooms the fun and funky property remains cosy and comfortable, and its 1980s Italian design and architecture is a tribute to nearby Lygon Street, sometimes known as Melbourne’s Little Italy. We’d love to check out Amphlett House too, their all-new drinking and dining venue spearheaded by celebrated chef and restaurateur Ian Curly and award-winning bartender Andrea Gualdi. Another reason to stay here? It’s just a stone’s throw from eccentric cocktail bar Caretaker’s Cottage, recently named to the World’s 50 Best Bars list at No.23. […]
