ProWine Asia (Singapore) organisers Messe Düsseldorf Asia announces cancellation of its 2020 edition; next ProWine Asia to take place in 2022.

Messe Düsseldorf Asia, organisers of biennial trade fair ProWine Asia (Singapore), has announced the cancellation of the 2020 edition of its seminal wine and spirits trade exhibition. Originally rescheduled from March this year to March 2021 due to the current global coronavirus health pandemic, Messe Düsseldorf Asia has decided to totally pull the plug on this 2020 edition of its International Trade Fair for Wines and Spirits dedicated to the Southeast Asian region.

“We are confident that the move to 2022 will better position ProWine Asia (Singapore) to deliver customer expectations and performance success for the wines and spirits sector, particularly since the rich international profile of participants is the very hallmark of the trade fair,” shared Gernot Ringling, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf Asia.

Moving the Singapore edition to 2022, explained Ringling, will allow for a longer period for economic recovery, and together with the resumption of global travel, international wines and spirits producers will be better prepared to do business then as the industry rebounds and prepares for growth in Southeast Asia. “Direct access to key and new markets in the region, innovation, and new routes to market such as e-commerce, will be essential, and we look forward to delivering these possibilities with renewed enthusiasm and vigour for ProWine Asia (Singapore) 2022,” said Ringling.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all industry partners, exhibitors and visitors for their continued support as we adapt to shifting conditions together. We will share the new dates soon,” he added.

The announcement, while expected considering the impact of COVID-19 on global travel and world economies, elicited disappointment. “As a startup in the alcohol consulting and distribution space, we want to reach a lot of people quickly,” said Matthew Fergusson-Stewart, Managing Director of Spun Spirits. “Prowine Asia 2020 would have been a great way for us to do this.”

“Unfortunately we will have to wait until 2022, but we’re all facing the same challenges as we meet the challenges of COVID-19 in a responsible manner,” noted Fergusson-Stewart.

First launched in 2016, ProWine Asia (Singapore) is a key trade event for the wine and spirits industry in Southeast Asia. The four-day biennial affair that gathers brand owners, producers, distributors, buyers, specialty retailers, sommeliers, bartenders, and industry professionals from around the region. Its 2018 edition welcomed over 7,200 trade visitors, and included a lineup of 300 companies from 33 countries including 14 national and country groups.

Messe Düsseldorf Asia will be focusing its efforts on ProWine Asia (Hong Kong) which will take place 12-14 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. ProWine Asia alternates annually between Hong Kong and Singapore. ProWine Asia (Singapore) and ProWine Asia (Hong Kong) are part of the ProWein World Series of leading events for wines, spirits and craft drinks, under the Messe Düsseldorf group.
