The Glenlivet Cocktail Capsule Collection, a set of whisky-based cocktails in capsule form, is a little foretaste of what could be the future of cocktails.
Some of us may remember that Glenlivet created a stir among cocktail and whisky circles back in 2019 when it unveiled its tradition-breaking experimental cocktail capsules at London Cocktail Week. Touted as a new and different way to enjoy cocktails, those globules – created in partnership with award-winning London cocktail bar Tayēr + Elementary – were cocktail concoctions encased with a gelatinised casing made from seaweed. Basically the idea was that you could enjoy your “cocktail” by popping them into your mouth, instead of sipping it from a glass.
Traditionalists were quick to boo boo the invention. But others – those who, we assume, are less hide-bound – were far more forgiving.
Three years down the road, further R&D has resulted in smaller and more elegant capsules, and the single malt Scotch whisky brand has deemed them finally ready for an official global launch. The Glenlivet Cocktail Capsule Collection, as they are known, have just been launched in various markets around the world, including Australia and New Zealand. The collection was also officially released in Singapore as of last week, the first market in Asia to carry them.
While the Glenlivet Cocktail Capsule Collection offers a number of different flavours, Singapore gets four of them – Whisky Sour, Old Fashioned, The Last King, and Paloma. These four are (obviously) all concocted using The Glenlivet, specifically the Glenlivet 12 Years Old or the Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve. Other flavours including Ool La La, Scottish Coffee, and Mai Tai, are currently not available for Singapore.
Popping cocktails in capsule form may be a new and experimental thing for now, but we’re excited to see where this is going. Whisky boba tea next?
The Glenlivet Cocktail Capsule Collection will be available as a gift with purchase on Pernod Ricard Official Store on Shopee from 28 Feb 2022. Every purchase of The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve of The Glenlivet 12 Year Old will be accompanied by a jar of cocktail capsules. Each jar contains 12 capsules. Limited quantities available.
