Singapore’s Odette is accorded Best Restaurant in Asia at No.14 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list that saw modern Peruvian restaurant Central clinch the top prize.

World’s 50 Best has just named Lima’s Central as the best restaurant in the world for this year. The highly-anticipated annual list saw Central, the flagship Lima restaurant of accomplished chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, take top honours for its cutting-edge, inventively modern menu that explores the tastes and textures of Peru.

Closer to home, Singapore’s own Odette was listed at No.14. The contemporary French restaurant by Julien Royer was named The Best Restaurant in Asia, heading a gaggle of five other competitive entries from in and around Asia. There’s Bangkok’s Le Du and Gaggan Anand at No.15 and No.17 respectively right behind Odette. Tokyo is Asia’s best performing country with three entries – Den (No.21), Florilège (No.27), and Sézanne (No.37). Hong Kong provides Asia’s final entry on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list, with The Chairman bringing up the rear at No.50.

Royer himself also won the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award, an accolade given to the world’s leading chefs for their ‘significant positive influence on the culinary community’.

Central’s win is a massive triumph for South American gastronomy. Over the 21 years that the awards programme has witnessed the skyrocketing progress made by Latin America’s culinary scene. This year’s list saw Latin America grab a total of ten spots, with Lima alone offering four entries with Maido (No.6), Kjolle (No.28) and Mayta (No.47) alongside eventual winner Central.

In an earlier announcement, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants unveiled its top 51-100 winners for 2023. Singapore restaurants named to the secondary list included Burnt Ends (No.65), Zén (No.69), Meta (No.84), and Labyrinth (No.94).

“It gives me great pleasure to share the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 and celebrate the fantastic achievement of Central as the new No.1. Virgilio Martinez, Pía León and the whole Central team have truly paved the way in celebrating indigenous ingredients through their innovative dishes and warm hospitality. Their commitment to research, respect for their country’s heritage and promotion of Peru’s unique biodiversity is unmatched, and we’re honoured to name Central as The World’s Best Restaurant,” said William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

“This year’s list continues to show the breadth of culinary talent across the globe, and we look forward to seeing how it evolves even further in 2024 and beyond,” he added.

2022 winner Geranium was elevated to The World’s 50 best of the best Hall of Fame, joining the likes of El Bulli and El Celler de Can Roca from Spain, France’s Mirazur, UK’s The Fat Duck, and Eleven Madison Park from USA on that even more vaunted list.
