Royal Salute continues its partnership with celebrated British designer Richard Quinn for the 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition II.
Royal Salute’s latest collectible limited-edition whiskies have dropped. The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition II – part of the Fashion or Couture Collection – is a set of three whiskies created in partnership with world renowned British fashion designer Richard Quinn. The new release follows up on the blended Scotch whisky brand’s on-going collaboration with Quinn, coming after a very successful debut back in 2021 with the original 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition, as well as the Royal Salute House of Quinn by Richard Quinn last year.
Unfamiliar with Quinn? Those who dabble in couture will know the award-winning avant-garde fashion designer – he’s the first-ever recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design – for his bold and emotive textiles employed particularly in womenswear, with colour-clashing prints that are often nature-inspired.
Unlike many tie-ups with fashion icons, the Royal Salute 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition II is more than skin deep. For this expression, Royal Salute Master Blender Sandy Hyslop worked with Quinn for the liquid as well. Co-crafting the blend together at Strathisla Distillery in Speyside, Scotland, the pair put on their creative bonnets and composed a blend – after meticulous tastings testing, of course – that marries some of the most precious stocks maturing in Chivas Brothers’ whisky inventory. They include some from Braeval, Strathisla and Caperdonich, all aged for a minimum of 21 years.
The result? A rather bespoke blend that Royal Salute says offers “rich fruity notes, elevated with hints of spice and gentle smoky characteristics, making it wonderfully balanced and opulent”.
And of course, there’s Quinn’s masterful flourishes. Indeed the Royal Salute 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition II is really a set of three whiskies, each of which comes in Royal Salute’s signature glass-coated porcelain flagon but is emblazoned with a different design showcasing his characteristic bold style and love of colliding patterns. There’s one that depicts a print that brings to mind some of his most famous work with rose petals and white polka dots against a black backdrop, another features a striking white daisy against a forest green background, and the last – dedicated for global travel retail – portrays flowers of purple, yellow and green against white.
“I get inspired and motivated by someone who has something new to say, who brings a new perspective, or pushes boundaries to create something new and Sandy Hyslop does this in incredible fashion when it comes to crafting outstanding Scotch,” shared Richard Quinn. “Spending time with him at Strathisla Distillery was a stand-out highlight for me and the creative journey we’ve been on together has been incredible.”
“Extending the collaboration with Royal Salute was a no-brainer for me, and I love the idea that our collaborative effort will find its way into the hands of appreciators of craft across the world,” Quinn added.
Royal Salute was originally conceived as a gift by Chivas for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth back in 1953. Over the years the brand has released various expressions that pay tribute to the ideals of royalty and monarchy; the Fashion Collection by Quinn is the rare departure from that but still celebrates Britishness.
The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Richard Quinn Edition II is available at select luxury retailers worldwide at a recommended retail price of S$340.
