The Langham, Hong Kong is the luxurious 5-star stay you want for that weekend shopping getaway in the bustling city that is Hong Kong.
The Langham, Hong Kong is a grand old dame. The hotel’s facade looks little aged and weatherbeaten like many of the buildings in Tsim Tsa Tsui (Hong Kong has borne the brunt of many a typhoon, after all; in fact, the city was visited by Typhoon Talim the day before our stay), but inside the hotel itself remains lovingly maintained, oozing the timeless luxury and understated glamour it’s known for since opening its doors back in 1989.
The Langham, Hong Kong is also big. The hotel offers 498 luxurious guest rooms of various configurations catered to almost any kind of traveler. They range from the regular Superior Courtyard View Room and Superior City View Room to more opulent suites such as the lush One Bedroom Suite and the stately Director Suite. Or, if you have cash to splash, the magnificent Chairman Suite that will make you feel like a total boss.
We had the opportunity to stay in Executive Room. Which sounds like an entry-level position, but this 36 square-metre room is more than spacious enough for two persons – by cramped Hong Kong standards – and comes dripping with premium amenities. And more importantly, complimentary lounge access to The Langham Club.
What’s truly unique about rooms in The Langham, Hong Kong? The decor. From the Italian marble accents and lush fabrics of room couches to the luxurious carpeting, your room is tastefully designed down to the minute detail. It’s whimsical and fashionable, and totally on brand – think Laura Ashley meets Vivienne Westwood, with the splashes of colour you associate with Paul Smith.
You’ll spend quite a bit of time in the bathroom clad in beautiful black-and-white Italian marble, with its soak tub and separate rain shower. But what we truly appreciated were the little hospitality touches; aside from a welcome bowl of fruit, there was an array of traditional local snacks along with a piping hot pot of milk tea for some in-room high tea.
How incredibly British. How incredibly Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is a capital of gastronomy; you can expect the best hotels in town to boast at least one award-winning restaurant worth travelling out of the way for. With The Langham, Hong Kong, that is three Michelin-starred fine-dining Chinese restaurant T’ang Court, a culinary temple dedicated to traditional Cantonese cuisine. Otherwise there’s the very elegant Palm Court perfect for a spot of afternoon tea, or Artesian – yes, an offshoot of that award-winning London bar – for an evening Martini or three.
But the main reason many out-of-towners pick The Langham, Hong Kong for a stay? Its location at Tsim Tsa Tsui in Kowloon right next to Harbour City, a massive shopping complex with over 700 stores to sate even the most compulsive of shoppers. It’s also near enough – some within walking distance – to some fascinating street and night markets up Nathan Road. For this reason, the lobby is always chockfull with guests returning to their rooms heavily laden with shopping.
So if you’re looking to make a short hop to Hong Kong for a spot of weekend shopping, consider a stay at The Langham, Hong Kong.
Verdict
We love The Langham, Hong Kong’s whimsically-designed rooms and tasteful luxury, and particularly The Langham Club lounge access that opens up to even more indulgence. Its proximity to the mega-shopping complex that is Harbour City is a huge boon for those inclined towards shopping. For gastronomes, T’ang Court is worth pencilling in a visit, even if you’re not doing a stay.
