Live music lounge Maduro makes a beautiful progression from its previous Dempsey Hill location to new digs at serene Sofitel Singapore Sentosa.

Venues for good live music are relatively rare in Singapore. But music aficionados – particularly of the jazz variety – will almost always name Maduro as one of their favourites.

First opened back in 2019 at Dempsey Hill, the jazz lounge quickly attracted a loyal following for its live music curation that not only hosted many local industry legends such as Jeremy Monteiro and Jacintha Abisheganaden as well as visiting musicians from abroad, but also looked to discover emerging talent in our city. Then the global pandemic put paid to its grand music plans, shutting down what would have been a shining beacon in Singapore’s live music scene.

The good news? Maduro is back. The jazz lounge and bar has found a new home amidst the serenity of Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa.

You can’t miss it. From the rhythmic walking bass riffs and intricate tinkle of piano keys to the liveliness of scat singing or funky syncopated jazz beats, your ears will instantly pick up those siren sounds emanating from the lower lobby of the luxury Sentosa hotel resort.

Private Lounge

It’s a beautiful venue, its various spaces dotted with globally sourced artworks by Maduro’s culture-loving founder Peter Ng. There’s the main listening lounge when you first enter; here’s where the live music happens. It is flanked by private rooms on one side, and a cosy outdoor courtyard garden on the other.

Also hidden within is a private cigar room, complete with a wide selection of Cuban, Dominican and Nicaraguan blends are available for enthusiasts. But of course; Maduro is, after all, named after a cigar that’s described as rich, expressive, and bold.

Much like the crowd it attracts.

Private Room

Maduro’s drinks programme is an expansive and eclectic one that revolves around an impressive whisky collection. You can certainly opt for wine or the various classic cocktails on offer, but the draw here is a whisky selection that runs the gamut from core vintage expressions by the big boys to unique once-off independently bottled releases. Exclusive bottles we espied include the Cask of Distinction Lagavulin 200th Anniversary Special Collector’s Edition Aged 15 Years, Isabella’s Islay Aged 30 Years, and Eidolon Port Ellen 1983 Aged 36 Years Sherry Butt, among others.

When I visited, powerhouse jazz vocalist Michelle Poh – known in local music circles as Michelle SgP – was holding court, dazzling her audience. I was similarly entranced as I sipped on my Negroni.

Singapore needs more venues like Maduro.
