Winners of Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards announced; 23 top wines produced from across China honoured at an awards ceremony at Wynn Macau last month.
Wynn Macau shone a huge spotlight on wines made in China when it hosted the first-ever Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards ceremony last month. Held on 13 April, the awards ceremony saw wine experts, industry professionals and winemakers come together to celebrate the highest quality wines produced in China.
A panel of 27 internationally acclaimed wine judges – including seven Masters of Wines and three Master Sommeliers such as Fongyee Walker MW, Gus Zhu MW and Andrew Caillard MW – headed by panel chair Eddie McDougall of The Flying Winemaker put over 700 submissions from nearly 200 premium wineries across China through a rigorous judging process to identify the most worthy winners. Wine submissions were awarded either Gold, Silver, or Bronze; they were also considered for additional 23 award categories that recognised wines by quality, varietal, and region.
Ningxia’s Fei Tswei landed arguably the most important award of the evening, with its Fei Tswei Marseland Reserve 2021 picking up the ‘Best Wine of China’ accolade, as well as ‘Best Marselan’ and ‘Best of Ningxia’.
Varietal category awardees include Xinjiang’s Chateau Zhong Fei, which won ‘Best Syrah/Shiraz’ with its Chateau Zhong Fei Syrah 2021, while Domaine Franco-Chinois from Hebei snatched ‘Best Petit Manseng’ with its Domaine Franco-Chinois Petit Manseng 2018. It also won ‘Best of North China’ with the same wine. Other region winners include Jiayuguan Zixuan, named ‘Best of Gansu & Shaanxi’ with the Zixuan Xuezhen 2022, while Yunnan’s Shangri-La was awarded ‘Best of Southwest High Mountain’ with the Shangri-La Winery Sacred Legends Chardonnay 2022.
“The newly launched Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards aims to promote outstanding Chinese wines and showcase Macao and Wynn’s world-class hospitality. We have created the much-anticipated awards ceremony to serve as a global platform to allow wine experts from various regions in China to collaborate, exchange knowledge and promote Chinese wines on a larger international stage, enhancing the reputation of Chinese premium wineries in the world,” shared Linda Chen, President, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, Limited.
Wynn will also be promoting the best wines from the Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards with a special “Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Month” this May. Throughout the month, guests visiting Wynn will able to participate in a celebration of Chinese wine excellence paired with its various prestigious dining venues Chef Tam’s Seasons, Lakeview Palace, SW Steakhouse and Mizumi at Wynn Palace, as well as Golden Flower, Wing Lei, Lakeside Trattoria and Mizumi at Wynn Macau. Many of these winning wines will also be featured in more casual settings with tasting flights offered at Wynn’s various bars, including Palace Reserve Club, Cinnebar, Bar Cristal and Wing Lei Bar.
The awards are likely to have the effect of garnering more attention to China’s winemaking industry, both as the largest wine producer in the world but also the country with the biggest consumption in wine. China’s economic growth over the past two decades have developed a large middle class with a penchant for fine wine, and Chinese winemakers have raised their winemaking standards have a result.
Chances are you’ll being seeing more Chinese wine in your part of the world sooner rather than later.
