Singapore’s very own Brass Lion gin distillery kicks off Brass Lion Gin School, a distilling masterclass that looks at schooling Singaporeans on what making a gin looks like.

Brass Lion Distillery, Singapore’s first-ever full-fledged micro-distillery specialising in small batch gins with local flavours, is ground-breaking for many reasons. It’s one of the first few local initiatives to help pave the way in regulatory breakthrough and change laws for the distillation of alcoholic spirit here in Singapore, yet unlike its contemporaries the home-grown distillery was the only one that looked at the process of producing commercial spirit as a holistic experience, from the distillation process all the way to a full consumer experience complete with distillery tours and a fully decked-out tasting room.

Now it’s added yet another feather to the cap – it’s launched the Brass Lion Gin School, a series of distilling masterclasses that aim to introduce Singaporeans to the concept of distilling. It’s more than just a distillery tour.

The idea here is very simple – it’s a three-hour session that participants can sign for, where they will be provided with their own mini copper still, and access to a swathe of botanical ingredients to craft their desired gin profiles. So whether you like your gin citrusy through the addition of citrus peel or tangy herbs like lemon balm, or more floral through rose buds, jasmine flowers or goji berries, you can compose your preferred flavours into your gin. Once done, you can then bottle your creation to bring home… but not before you try it as a cocktail.

Why is Brass Lion Gin School so groundbreaking? If you know the strict guidelines that revolve around the making of commercial spirit – taxation, health safety issues and all – here in Singapore you’d know why. What Brass Lion has created here is not just a fun consumer experience, but sets the tone and approach to how the production and consumption of alcoholic products can be like in Singapore.

“We believe Singapore is the perfect place to create a holistic distillery experience given how the cocktail and spirits scene here has matured. Consumers are always looking for new experiences and with such a discerning audience, it was a natural step to take the public drinking experience to new heights,” says Jamie Koh, Managing Director of Brass Lion Distillery.

“We want to share our love for the art of distilling through education and the hands-on experience we are able to provide at our distillery,” Koh adds.

Brass Lion Gin School officially kicks off during the coming National Day weekend –  9, 10 and 11th August 2019 – and also every Sunday thereafter. Each session costs $198 per person (including a welcome drink, a customised bottle of gin, as well as a cocktail made with your gin). You can book your spot here.
