Junior The Pocket Bar kicks off a kooky limited-run CNY cocktail pop-up in collaboration with Rémy Martin that runs from now till end February 2021.

Those familiar with Junior The Pocket Bar know that the petite-sized cocktail bar regularly changes its theme as the seasons go by; Junior’s most recent cocktail concept was modern Japanese-inspired “Washi” at its current venue, but its old location on Tanjong Pagar Road also ran conceptualisations such as Mezcal-focused Norma when they first launched, Tiki-inspired Pacifica, and the New Orleans-influenced Magnolia, among others.

And like last year, for Chinese New Year in 2021 Junior is again partnering Rémy Martin for a seasonal festive CNY pop-up.

Any activity that’s Lunar New Year themed can tend towards tacky and clichéd; Junior The Pocket Bar’s CNY cocktail pop-up is anything but. As with all their pop-ups Junior redid its interiors to reflect the season, complete with a dragon of fabric hanging from the ceiling. And, of course, Rémy Cointreau products festooning the back bar.

The seasonal cocktails shine, their CNY flavours appropriate applied and well integrated. There’s the Rémy Martin-spiked Rolling for Prosperity, which draws inspiration from pineapple tarts. Ang Bao Na Lai, a take on the daiquiri, will prove to be a hit with its lychee, grapefruit, lemon and rose flavours. If you prefer something refreshing, Heart of Gold is a highball concocted with Cointreau, fino sherry, vermouth and spiced Mandarin soda. For something spirit forward, Fanning the Flames is a Manhattan/Old Fashioned twist incorporating housemade bak kwa bitters.

There’s festive eats too. Pie Tee Cups is Junior’s version of the popular Peranakan savoury pastry tart that comes with braised pork belly, while Duck Wrappers is your classic Cantonese roast duck sliced and served with crepes and an array of condiments. Their Abacus Seeds is a fun, contemporary take on the Hakka favourite, and comes adorned with an onsen egg on top. Highly recommended is their sole dessert of Egg Tart, its Mandarin orange- and vanilla-infused egg curd silky and moreish in a vol-au-vent shell.

If you prefer to be socially responsible in these COVID-ravaged times, Junior does offer select seasonal CNY cocktails in 250ml bottles for takeaway and delivery.
