An exclusive gala dinner and induction ceremony hosted by the Jurade of Saint-Emilion will kickstart proceedings to Vinexpo Asia this May.

Singapore is gearing up this May to host one of the largest wine events to descend on the Lion City. Vinexpo Asia 2023, scheduled to be held from 23 to 25 May 2023, is set to see major players in the global wine trade come together in one place.

Drawing the curtains open on the massive wine trade exhibition will be the Jurade de Saint-Émilion, which will be hosting an exclusive gala dinner that will also see the association induct new members into its fold.

Keen oenophiles will know that Saint-Émilion, one of the Libournais appellations on the right bank of Bordeaux, is the oldest active wine-producing appellation from that esteemed French wine-producing region. Home to over 900 winegrowers working over 7,500 hectares of land under vine, Saint-Émilion also has the honour as the first winemaking region to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1999.

Saint-Émilion’s proud winemaking history will be put under the spotlight this May in Singapore during Vinexpo Asia. The opening gala dinner will see Jurade de Saint-Émilion welcome 15 new members (jurats) in an elaborate ceremony, hosted by Hubert de Boüard, its first-ever jurat but better known in the wine world as the co-owner of iconic Saint-Émilion wine producer Château Angelus.

Alongside Hubert de Boüard will be Singapore-born motorsports race driver and chancellor of the Jurade in Singapore, Melvin Choo, who will share the history and significance of the Jurade and introduce the new members during the gala dinner.

Jurats on tour

The Jurade ceremony is itself steeped in history, with the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion dating back to the 12th century. Originally formed with political and military powers that had jurisdiction over eight parishes across the region, it was recreated in 1948 to celebrate the proud traditions and culture of Saint-Émilion. To date there are some 140 jurats globally, sharing their passion for Saint-Émilion – and its wines! – around the world.

“My passion for wine forged my place in this prestigious brotherhood, and working with Saint-Émilion as the chancellor has allowed me to share the incredible history and exquisite tastes of the wine of Saint-Émilion,” shared Melvin Choo, Chancellor of the Jurade de Saint-Émilion in Singapore. “I am proud to bring the opening gala event to my home in Singapore, and to be able to share this with the growing wine connoisseur community locally who will surely appreciate the fine offerings of Saint-Émilion.”

“We look forward to Singapore being host to future Jurade ceremonies, and bringing together the global wine community,” Choo added.
