World Cucumber Day 2019 will take place Friday 14 June and Hendrick’s Gin intends to celebrate it in a bigger, better way with some 42 bars accepting the humble cucumber as currency this year.

We thought it a fun joke when Hendrick’s Gin adopted Cucumber Day – first started in 2011 by cucumber growers – back in 2016, but it was also “on brand”; Hendrick’s Gin counts the cucumber as a key ingredient in its botanical makeup. We took the event just a little more seriously when the gin brand brought it to Singapore in 2017 with a handful of bars participating. That number grew to 23 last year.

But World Cucumber Day is now officially a thing.

This year, a whopping 42 bars across Singapore will be accepting the cucumber as currency on World Cucumber Day 2019; during ‘Cucumber Hour’ from 7pm to 10pm on Friday 14 June 2019, you’ll be able to exchange a cucumber for a Hendrick’s & Tonic. That’s right, on that day bring along some cucumbers – any kind of cucumber – and use them for a gin and tonic bar hop across town.

Participating bars include:

  • Anti:Dote
  • Artemis Grill & Bar
  • BeGIN
  • The Dragon Chamber
  • Idlewild
  • Mitzo
  • Monarchy
  • PS Café – Fullerton
  • 1864 – Sofitel Singapore City Centre
  • Tess Bar & Kitchen
  • Yellow Pot Singapore, and
  • many more.

“The cucumber is synonymous with a Hendrick’s & Tonic and we’ve always held the cucumber in the highest regard. World Cucumber Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the wondrous possibilities of this noble fruit, and showcase its true value by converting it into currency,” says Charmaine Thio, Hendrick’s Southeast Asia brand ambassador.

“On this day we want to inspire people to cultivate and embrace their unusual side by adding delightful peculiarity to everyday universal things. We’re excited that many more are joining us in acknowledging the value of the cucumber.”

‘Cucumber Hour’ on World Cucumber Day 2019 will run from 7 to 10pm on Friday, 14 June. Redemptions are limited to 60 per bar, and one per customer.
